Welcome to Film Critic of the Week, a weekly mini-cast where we pick the brains of our favorite film critics.
Critic of the Week started in Mezzanine’s first year, with insights from the likes of Matthew Zoller Seitz, Matt Prigge, and Matt Singer. With the opening of Mezzanine’s blog, The Balcony, we thought it would be cool to bring back this weekly series as a podcast.
First off, we’ve got the awesome Scout Tafoya, who writes and edits the blog Apocalypse Now, and whose work is also found at RogerEbert.com. Not only does he write reviews for them, he also runs a video essay series called The Unloved, examining cult films and initially maligned movies and, as the title suggests, giving them the love they deserve. He’s also a filmmaker, with several horror films under his belt. In our fun conversation, we talk about Apocalypse now Redux, cult films, filmmaking and criticism, and videos essays.
Our show is produced and hosted by Kyle Turner. Our swinging music is “Two Cigarettes Please” by Esther Garcia and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Share Alike license, which means that Film Critic of the Week is, too.
