Today three critics groups announce their batch of selections for the best of film in 2013 with Boston, Los Angeles and New York’s second critics group all chipping in before the end of the day. The National Board of Review and NYFCC made separate stands going for Her and American Hustle respectively, as well as different winners in every major acting category, so it shall be interesting to see if any of these three groups start some kind of consensus going forward.
12 Years A Slave and Nebraska are all finishing strong today with lots of attention in acting and screenplay categories with Gravity and Her wrapping up the technical nods. One of today’s big surprises was witnessing unheralded candidates like James Franco and James Gandolfini being named best supporting actor by LAFCA and BSFC. Another pleasant surprise being Linklater, Delpy and Hawke’s Best Screenplay win for Before Midnight.
Thus far there has been a lot of diversity in the three groups’ choices; hasn’t been a clear consensus among critics with the exceptions of Cate Blanchett for Best Actress and 12 Years A Slave taking the top prize from Boston and New York. A lot of wealth was available to spread around with Adèle Exarchopoulos getting a few mentions for her breakout performance and The Wolf of Wall Street, Enough Said, Her, 12 Years and Gravity all receiving wins.
Los Angeles had more than a few ties today, concluding their selections with a Best Film tie between Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity and Spike Jonze’s Her. That puts 3 best film wins for 12 Years A Slave, 2 for Her and 1 for American Hustle.

I love the LA Critics picks. They definitely know what to go for and not be afraid to call it a tie.
