It’s happening. There is a sequel in development to 2013’s masterpiece of neon-tinged debauchery, Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. Titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming (obviously), it appears that the production company Wild Bunch is going to the Cannes Film Festival in a week to court distributors for the sequel. How else is Alien going to afford to keep stocking up on Calvin Klein Escape?
Speaking of Alien, the bad news is that the original creative team is not at all involved in this sequel, meaning Korine is not involved, and neither is Franco. It’s unclear which other cast members will return, with Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval only saying that there will be a mixture of old and new cast members.
“It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” Maraval said. Perhaps more comforting is the new creative team. The sequel will be directed by Jonas Åkerlund, the talented man behind Spun and Small Apartments, as well as plenty of acclaimed (and some infamous) music videos, from Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” to Rammstein’s “Pussy”. The script will be written by popular Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, the man who wrote the book Trainspotting, though not the film. However you feel about a sequel to Spring Breakers, this is certainly an intriguing creative duo.
As for plot details, little is known at this point, with Screen Daily writing, “the Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.” That’s all I need, really. Our heroes are coming back to fight militant Christians. I’m in! Who knows what this will be without Korine’s visionary perspective, but they have my attention. Spring break forever.

Spring Breakers was a great weaponized piece of art.
The sequel, like the “aesthetics” of so many dark, brooding, upside-down-crucifix-employing young adults who misunderstood Gummo, will apparently be soulless and empty.
