No, it’s not about the Iron Man villain, but the Sundance selection Whiplash may have just as much tension and a potentially evil figure on their hands. Miles Teller (Project X, The Spectacular Now) stars as a talented drummer who strives for absolute perfection under the tutelage of his ruthless instructor (JK Simmons). That perfection must be achieved at any cost — be it his own sanity and well-being that takes a dive for the sake of the craft.
The film, written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) is being described as “Full Metal Jacket at Julliard.” Whether or not Teller’s character wants to achieve greatness on his own as a percussionist, or he’s being threatened and bullied into the role by Simmons’ deranged teacher remains to be seen until the trailer appears. From this new batch of images, courtesy of First Showing, it seems like we’ll get something sinister out of Simmons; you don’t get blood on your drumsticks for no reason.
Whiplash will premiere on the first night of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

That picture of blood on the snare drum and the sticks is pretty damn cool.
