News regarding a release date for Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher has been a long time coming and today Sony Pictures Classics settled on November 14, 2014. The true story starring Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum, is among those in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Initially the film was due to close the proceedings at last year’s AFI Festival before Sony Pictures Classics postponed the film until 2014.
Foxcatcher tells “the true story of Olympic wrestling champion brothers Mark Schultz (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo) and their relationship with the eccentric John du Pont (Carell), heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune that led to murder.” A November release date sets the upcoming drama in prime award season territory. The wait has been a long one and I hope that the finished product lives up to the considerable hype that has surrounded the project, especially Carell’s possibly career-changing performance.
Miller’s last two films Capote and Moneyball were both nominated for Best Picture and with the involvement of Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, Foxcatcher has a great deal of buzz behind it among the winter releases to hit Cannes later this year.
Foxcatcher also stars Anthony Michael Hall, Sienna Miller and Vanessa Redgrave and hits theatres November 14th!
