The first major Top 10 poll for 2013 is out and it is from the folks over at BFI/Sight & Sound. The list is a pretty diverse set of films from all around the world and is voted on by a just as diverse set of film lovers. From BFI:
“Our new issue looks back at the past year in cinema with the help of over one hundred international critics, curators and academics – and features some surprises in our popular poll. As a taster, here’s our voters’ top ten films of the year…”
To check out the entire Top 10 be sure to click through to read it over at BFI, but taking top honors was The Act of Killing (a film I am still waiting to see). Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary has been one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, so this isn’t a terribly big surprise, and I imagine this won’t be the last we see of this film on the many Best of 2013 lists to come. I am most excited that all of this success is only bound to give another huge boost to Drafthouse Films and everything weird and great they do over there.
As a sneak preview I will tell you that 3 US films pop up on the list; Upstream Color (!), Frances Ha (!) and Gravity. To find out where they placed be sure to hit the link.

I’m a little surprised that Gravity places so high on the list. It just goes to show that you can never always anticipate what Sight and Sound will like.
