Fresh off the presses at Berlinfest, production company Worldview has released a still from David Gordon Green’s next film, Manglehorn, featuring Al Pacino as an ex-con seeking a return to normal life after being in prison for many years.
If Mangelhorn seems like an odd choice for David Gordon Green, the man behind big studio comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness, reconsider Green’s original indie roots reaching back to George Washington. Green has recently returned to smaller films with Prince Avalanche, and the upcoming Joe, starring Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan, so another small feature seems right up his alley.
Like Joe, Manglehorn features a more subdued lead role for an actor that has been known for shouting in his recent performances. Early festival word regarding Nicolas Cage’s performance is that it is a career renaissance level performance for the actor, hopefully we can expect a similar return to form for Pacino.
AJ Manglehorn is an aging, ordinary guy in a small town. He nurses his sick cat, squeezes out a conversation with the local bank teller every Friday, and eats at the same place every day. But there is more to Manglehorn than meets the eye: he’s an ex-con who, 40 years ago, gave up the woman of his dreams for a big ‘job’. He now obsesses daily over the choices he made. After a dramatic effort to start over, Manglehorn faces a terrifying moment and is unmasked as a guy with a very, very dark past.
The film also stars Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine, and Chris Messina. Manglehorn currently does not have a release date.

Could this be Pacino’s redemption after embarrassing himself with “Jack & Jill”?
