Hello, folks! If you couldn’t tell, here at Movie Mezzanine, we absolutely revere the silver screen. Our cinematic tastes are eclectic and varied, ranging from continually revisiting and updating the canon to going outside of it to find treasures that we take place in giving more visibility to. From classic cinema like The Apartment to obscure gems like the work of Polish auteur Walerian Borowczyk to the latest masterpieces like Listen Up Philip or The Tree of Life. We’ve even gone to bat for some unconventional and underrated films that we think are still worth a look, like Tammy.
Mezzanine has been a superb place for some of the burgeoning film writers on the net, who’ve gone off to write for places like The Atlantic and The Dissolve, but we thought, why don’t we open it up a little? So, let us show you The Balcony, a place where our appreciation of cinema and all it has to offer extends to different forms beyond feature writing and reviews. Think of us like an exciting cutting-edge gallery: Influenced by such sites as Slant’s The House Next Door, The Film Stage, and RogerEbert.com’s Balder and Dash, we’ll have personal essays, themed weeks, conversations, fun listicles that’ll open you up to magnificent movies (or have you revisit them), polls, daily links you should check out, film recommendations, and we’ll find videos that’ll give fresh insight into films you already loved, or will help you find appreciation for them. But, to be sure, The Balcony will be carving out a unique voice of its own.
We will also be teaming up with the likes of Fandor, an innovative streaming service for art house and independent cinema, to bring you weekly film watching suggestions and an exclusive discount for subscribing using a Mezzanine code. The Critical Press, the publishing house responsible for printing some of the most interesting modern books on film, like Peter Labuza’s Approaching the End: Imagining Apocalypse in American Film and Tina Hassannia’s Asghar Farhadi: Life and Cinema, will continue to be our partner in crimes and misdemeanors, with excerpts from their most recent releases.
The Balcony is going to be a new venture for Movie Mezzanine, and we have a superb team of writers along with us: Jake Pitre, Max Covill, Julia Alexander, Nick Mastrangelo, Dylan Griffin, Abby Welles, Colin Biggs, Katina Vangopoulos, and myself, with more writers soon to join the team. We are ecstatic to open up another part of the theater. Welcome, folks, to The Balcony!
Warm wishes,
Kyle Turner

Sounds great! Hopefully one day I’ll have the courage to share my writing with communities of film lovers such as this.
