Gather round Cronenberg fans for the first trailer of his latest filmĀ Maps To The Stars. This outing finds Cronenberg setting his off-kilter lens onto Hollywood life with a screenplay by Bruce Wagner. The film made the list of our own Russell Hainline’s Top 50 Most Anticipated Films of 2014.
The plot appears to intertwine multiple characters and storylines centering around the Weiss family, who live in Hollywood. The father, Sanford (John Cusack), is a life coach to actors and socialites while his wife Christina (Olivia Williams) looks after their child star Benjie. The return of daughter Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) from a criminal sanatorium throws a massive wrench into their lives. Adding to the stellar cast are Julianne Moore, Evan Bird and Cronenberg repeaters Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon. Their is no release date at this time, but given Cronenberg’s persistent presence at Cannes in the past, a premiere at the festival this year seems likely.
In typical Cronenberg style this film looks eerie, sexy and disturbing. Add to it that I don’t know what’s going on at all only plays to Cronenberg’s strengths even more. I’m a big fan of Cronenberg, who even at his most tame is still deeply unsettling, and I hope to hear about a release date forĀ Maps To The Stars soon.
