Today saw the release of the much anticipated Furious 7 trailer. Unfortunately I was at work when it was released, so I spent the whole day looking at the clock waiting for my shift to end. I was this close to calling my boss this morning and telling him I couldn’t come in until I watched this trailer. That’s only slightly hyperbolic, because that’s how much this franchise has come to mean to me. It’s strange to think that I’m this excited for a 7th film in a franchise about criminals racing cars. In my bio down there it says I can talk about how crazily constructed this franchise is for 30 minutes, and that’s not an exaggeration. If you ever run into me on the street I’ll be happy to talk about it.
The trailer opens up with some absolutely insane and gripping action, and right there director James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious) proves he can play with the best in the action major leagues. Then it moves into a barrage of money shots that had me wide-eyed in wonder. The Rock says “Daddy’s gotta go to work.” and busts out of a cast through sheer will and muscle. Kurt Russell has joined the game. The Rock has a gigantic machine gun. Jason Statham, Vin Diesel and The Rock are all going to be in a film together. Then Vin Diesel says “I don’t have friends…I got family.” as they cut to a shot of Paul Walker. And right then I actually had to fight back tears. Somehow it didn’t feel exploitative that they just used Paul Walker’s death to make me emotional, it felt earned. I trust Wan and company to do the same justice and respect in the full film.
Furious 7 is directed by James Wan. It stars Vin Diesel, The Rock, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Djimon Hounsou and will be released April 3rd, 2015. Check out the trailer below.
