The road to getting a solid US release date for Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer has been a ragged one, with the disgruntled director reportedly battling Harvey Weinstein over what he felt were unnecessary cuts made to the film. But it appears that the saga may finally be coming to an end, when the director hinted to audiences at this week’s Mar del Plata Film Festival that his film just might remain in tact after all:
“And the good news is that after all the speculation and comments about that 20-minute cut, and considering the original version that was released in Korea and France also will be released in Japan and Hong Kong, we have been talking a lot about keeping the original cut for the U.S. release, so what I can say is…have faith,” he said.
Apparently, there’s not much you can do when the numbers are talking — the original cut of the film is the most successful in Korean cinema history, and just received Best Director, Best Film and Best Cinematography at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. It’s also experiencing rave reviews and success in France, where it is currently showing.
Stateside, we will wait to hear word about our own release date, but until then we’ll have to enjoy this new batch of images from the film (courtesy of The Playlist and Purple Snow), featuring anyone and everyone you can think of from the apocalyptic thriller — Octavia Spencer, Ah-Sung Ko, Chris Evans, Allison Pill and a truly bizarre Tilda Swinton, which is a lot for her.
