You read right. Frank Capra‘s 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life is getting a sequel, just short of 70 years later. Why? Couldn’t tell you.
If you ever wondered what the rest of the story was, which you probably didn’t, you can now find out in the aptly named It’s A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story. Written by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton, “it simply must be shared” says Karolyn Grimes of the original film. What exactly must be shared?
As reported by Variety, evidently this:
“Karolyn Grimes, who played George Bailey’s daughter “Zuzu” in the original, will return for the “Wonderful Life” sequel as an angel who shows Bailey’s unlikeable grandson (also named George Bailey) how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.”
If it sounds unappealing and unnecessary that’s because it is. In a world filled to the brim with unnecessary sequels and remakes this one takes the cheese. It’s A Wonderful Life is such a beautifully crafted film, and a sequel holds serious power in hurting its reputation. Not only that though, the way the film is being described so far makes it seem like a rehash of the same characters and themes just in a different time, and that has to be the worst way to approach a sequel.
I ‘m honestly astounded by this news. A sequel to It’s A Wonderful Life is just wrong on so many levels, and so far it sounds very, very lazy.
It’s A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story is aiming for a 2015 release.
