What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but when new movie footage debuts at CinemaCon, that goes everywhere. Fox was at the Las Vegas convention to promote their upcoming summer blockbusters (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as well as their prestigious winter release, the David Fincher-helmed Gone Girl.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (May 23, 2014)
“The opening of X-Men was set in a dark warehouse where Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) and other mutants are fighting several giant Sentinels — and losing. That is, until Kitty Pryde uses her phasing ability to somehow time-jump right at the end of the clip. The remaining footage was a trailer for the film.”
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (July 11, 2014)
“The scene from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes features Caesar and his fellow genetically evolved apes living peacefully until they are discovered by humans. The explosive footage, which played very well to the Las Vegas audience, showed the growing tension between the humans and apes as some humans consider defending the apes while others want them wiped out.”
Gone Girl (October 3, 2014)
“Gone Girl‘s dark trailer showed Ben Affleck’s character dealing with a media frenzy after his wife (Rosamund Pike) disappears. The trailer promises a haunting thriller, very much in line with Gillian Flynn’s book on which it is based. Affleck’s character can be seen creepily posing with his wife’s “Missing” poster and being harassed by media and police as the search continues for her. “I did not kill my wife. I am not a murderer,” says Affleck’s haunting voice-over toward the end of the trailer.”
With several months to go before any of these pictures hit theatres, it appears Fox has definitely found the sweet spot for the large following of fans behind X-Men, Planet of the Apes and Gone Girl. Trailers have been out for ‘Days of Future Past’ and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for a while, but audiences have seen very little of the upcoming adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel with the exception of a still and cover from Entertainment Weekly.
Maybe we will get a look at that Gone Girl trailer along with ‘Days of Future Past’ in May.
