Jake Gyllenhaal is on a roll with these past few films of his. He delivered solidly in Duncan Jones’s Source Code, put in a captivating performance in End of Watch, and went back-to-back with Denis Villeneuve with one of last year’s best performances (and my favorite film of 2013) as Detective Loki in Prisoners and pulling on-camera double duty in Villeneuve’s most recent and polarizing Enemy. He’s looking to keep the streak hot this fall with the release of Nightcrawler – the directorial debut from Dan Gilroy (writer on The Fall, The Bourne Legacy) – which follows his character as a young man who gets caught up in the underground world of freelance crime journalism in LA. Over the weekend a clip from the film surfaced on the web as just “Hard Worker Seeking Employment” posted by Gyllenhaal’s character Louis Bloom.
It’s hard to classify this footage as it’s not quite a trailer and you’re not sure if it’s a clip directly from the film, and it doesn’t reveal much about the film’s plot – and that’s part of what makes it so arresting. Gyllenhaal’s character recites – in various locations with increasing frustration – a rehearsed job interview mantra. It doesn’t offer much context to the film, but Gyllenhaal is captivating nonetheless. Here’s hoping the filmmakers will follow up this intriguing bit of footage with a proper trailer soon.
Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton, Rene Russo and Riz Ahmed and will be released Oct. 17th, 2014. Check out the clip below.
