Look we all understand Alfonso Cuarón is in hot demand right now. His film, Gravity, revolutionized what we can expect from the future of Science-Fiction films and was box-office success. Perhaps it even should’ve won the Oscar for Best Picture. Well there are plenty of rumors of where he will end up next, but thankfully it won’t be with the Harry Potter spinoff.
Word broke yesterday that Cuarón denied any involvement with the Harry Potter spinoff film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find To Them, and further clarified he is looking to take a break from Sci-Fi heavy films after the extensive work on Gravity.
Cuarón told Spanish news agency EFE (via DigitalSpy),”[Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban] was a very beautiful experience for me. I have a lot of love for that universe and I tremendously admire JK Rowling, but today, for the present, projects based around lots of visual effects don’t attract me. “I’m coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit.”
Alfonso Cuarón has also been linked to a prequel for The Shining entitled The Overlook Hotel and he has denied any involvement in that as well.
While it would be wonderful to have a talent such as Cuarón for some of our favorite franchises, he is at his best when he is free to create works that aren’t tied to any medium. While there are countless fans of his entry in the Harry Potter franchise, it can also be seen as the one film that worked outside of the framework of the others. Cuarón wrote the scripts for Gravity, Children of Men, and even Y Tu Mamá También easily some of his most acclaimed and recognized works. So before we go attaching Cuarón to projects that are based off existing properties, please remember that his best work comes from his own imagination.

If turning down another Harry Potter film means having him do something smaller and maybe set in Mexico, then I’ll for it. I think he should do something small and just have some fun. I’ll go see it.
