First “Men, Women & Children” Trailer: Technology is Depressing

We have the first trailer for Jason Reitman’s new film Men, Women & Children online today. I’m a fan of Reitman, loving both Thank You For Smoking and Up in the Air immensely, but I’m beginning to wonder if he’s still got it. I wasn’t in love with Young Adult despite Charlize Theron’s great performance, and who can honestly take Labor Day seriously? I am also getting a little tired of the insistence that technology is a sorrow-inducing detriment to human connection. It’s not that simple, but the trailer seems to lean heavily on insisting that it is, just showing how everyone is existentially hollow inside because of their phones.

But with all that said, there are reasons to look forward to the film. I haven’t given up on Reitman by any means, I’ve just begun to re-evaluate him now that he will have 6 films to his name. He also has gathered an impressive cast together in Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ansel Elgort, Jennifer Garner, J.K. Simmons, Kaitlyn Dever & Emma Thompson. Every 5 or so years Sandler does one meaningful film/performance just to remind us he can, and ladies and gentleman this might be it. Soak it in while you can, because he’ll certainly go back to the unfunny drivel he’s been coasting on for the past decade after this.

Men, Women & Children will be in limited release on Oct. 3rd. Check out the synopsis and trailer below.

The official synopsis is as follows:

Men, Women & Children follows the story of a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image, and their love lives. The film attempts to stare down social issues such as video game culture, anorexia, infidelity, fame hunting, and the proliferation of illicit material on the internet. As each character and each relationship is tested, we are shown the variety of roads people choose – some tragic, some hopeful – as it becomes clear that no one is immune to this enormous social change that has come through our phones, our tablets, and our computers.
