4 thoughts on “The 2013 Oscar Nominations”
Few surprising omissions from Best Director – Bigelow, Affleck. Otherwise, pretty expected. Wonder if this means we’ll have a director/picture split?
God, I hope so.
As a rule I treat the Oscars as though they’re disposable, because they are, but I’m still allowed to be pleased when a year’s worth of nominations looks as good as this. Seeing Beasts get so much recognition from an institution that tends to reward work that strives for prestige is heartening; I’m not convinced that the film will win anything, mind, but regardless it’s great to see Zeitlin and Wallis nominated at all.
I have my hang-ups and concerns– it’s sort of a bad punchline to see Cooper pegged as a potential “Best Actor” winner, and yes, it’s weird to see Bigelow and Affleck shut out of the “Best Director” category– but that’s always the case with these things.
As you know, I’m not (and still not) a supporter of Beasts of the Southern Wild. I’m a bit shocked that Bigelow didn’t get a nod.
