Now here is a collaboration I am looking forward to! Leonardo DiCaprio and Alejandro González Iñárittu have both set up their next project together titled The Revenant. Based on the novel by Michael Punke, The Revenant is a gritty historical western that revolves around DiCaprio’s Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who is mauled by a bear and then left for dead and robbed by his own team of trappers and hunters. He ends up surviving and slowly healing himself as he sets out to track them all down for revenge.
This will be DiCaprio’s first role to film after his Oscar-nominated fantastic performance in The Wolf of Wall Street. He had been talking about taking a brief break from acting after filming Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street back-to-back-to-back. While I’m sure he deserved a breather, I’m glad he’s keeping it brief and teaming up with one of my favorite directors in Iñárittu for a largely isolated one-man performance.
Iñárittu has shown a mastery for visual poetry, pacing and character depth throughout his filmography and I’m very excited to see him apply his sensibilities to something more genre-rooted. Iñárittu’s next film Birdman starring Michael Keaton will be released later this year on October 17th, and it’s one I’m looking forward to with the same enthusiasm as The Revenant. The Revenant is set to begin filming this September for a Fall 2015 release, so we should hear about the rest of the cast within the coming months.

If I remember correctly, Christian Bale was slated to take this part himself but the project never got off the ground. I’m glad they got it going again with DiCaprio in tow. This is going to be great.
Yeah at one point John Hillcoat was going to direct it with Bale, another collaboration I would have loved to see. Luckily it’s going again with an immensely talented director and star still. Can’t wait.
