Director of the Elite Squad films, José Padilha has been weighing his options for his next feature effort after RoboCop, but reports today suggest he may have found his followup. He is set to reunite with frequent collaborator Wagner Moura later this year for the Netflix series Narcos revolving around Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, but his next feature film may be Nekome.
Scripted by John Hlavin, the title is the Yiddish translation for the word revenge. Set just after the end of World War II, two young survivors of the Holocaust are sent by the Jewish underground to Brazil in order to hunt down and kill the escaped Nazis that ran their concentration camp.
Padilha’s English language debut RoboCop wasn’t the disaster many expected it to be, but it was still quite underwhelming from a director as skilled as Padilha. I’m very excited to see him get back to making films in his home country of Brazil, as his work from there have been among my favorite films this past decade. Combine that with a tense premise such as this and I think we may see Padilha bounce back real well. Here is hoping that we hear more about a start date for filming and casting soon.
