The first look at the upcoming Australian crime thriller Son of a Gun starring Ewan McGregor has made its way online. The film, directed by Julius Avery, follows a young man named JR (Brendon Thwaites) who becomes the protege of Australia’s biggest criminal Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor) while in prison.
Australians have been turning out a lot of great cinema recently, with David Michôd, John Hillcoat and Patrick Hughes all delivering interesting Australian set genre-fare within the last decade. What also intrigues me about the film is the prospect of getting to see Ewan McGregor go dark, something we rarely get to see him do. Though it will make its Australian debut in 2 weeks at Cinefest Oz before opening wide there in October, the film currently has no US release date, but when it gets one it will be distributed by A24. With the rollout of the poster and images, we can expect to get a release date and maybe a trailer soon.
Son of a Gun stars Ewan McGregor, Brendon Thwaites, Alicia Vikander, Jacek Koman, Matt Nable, Tom Budge.
