Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the smash-hit Frozen with Chris Buck has chosen her next project, A Wrinkle in Time.
Lee will begin work on a treatment of A Wrinkle in Time based on Madeleine L’Engle’s classic tale in which children travel through time and space to find their missing father. According to Variety, “Published in 1962, “Wrinkle in Time” was one of Lee’s favorite novels as a child, and she impressed Disney executives with her take on the project, which emphasizes a strong female-driven narrative and creatively approaches the science fiction and world-building elements of the book.”
After Lee’s success with Frozen, Disney probably let her have her choice of a new project. Disney has actually been trying to get A Wrinkle in Time off the ground since 2010 and she will take over from the first draft that Jeff Stockwell (Bridge to Terabithia) previously worked on. There is currently no director attached to the project, but Jim Whitaker will produce with Catherine Hand.
In addition to A Wrinkle in Time, L’Engle also wrote four other novels that are attached to Time, so a chance for a big franchise is also in the cards should this prove successful. There was a miniseries created for the title in 2004, but it was poorly received and this would be the first opportunity for the novel to get the big-screen treatment.
