In a recent interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (The Transformers series) revealed that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) has signed on to direct the Bruce Willis action thriller Five Against a Bullet, which follows 5 bodyguards hired to protect a Mexican politician through an election after his father is killed by a drug cartel. Here’s what di Bonaventura had to say about the film and Joe Carnahan.
“Joe [Carnahan] we just put on a project called Five Against a Bullet, which I’ve loved for a long time. It is a tale of a group of men who have become cynical, sort of lost their sense of hope about life and the world, who are rekindled and betrayed and rekindled and betrayed in this story, and it’s got some of the coolest action and some of the greatest characters, and it’s a really fantastic action movie that I think will really grab people. And Joe’s working on it right now. We have a great script and no doubt he’ll put a little pen to paper as well, but we’re already in great shape and Sony loves the project and no doubt we’ll start trying to figure out how to cast that.”
A month or so back I wrote at length about how much undeserved trouble Carnahan has had in the past getting projects made, so I’m thrilled to hear that he’s got his next film set. I don’t know where this leaves his Narc adaptation for TV, but I’m happy to hear we won’t have to wait much longer for him to get back to the silver screen. When Five Against a Bullet was first put together a few years back Bruce Willis was attached, and although di Bonaventura didn’t make any mention of him in the interview we’ll assume for now that he’s still attached. Carnahan is one of the most underrated working directors in my opinion, and the action chops and character work he’ll bring to this film will no doubt be great to watch. We can assume casting will begin within the next few months, so once that starts we’ll be sure to bring you the news on it. Carnahan’s latest film Stretch is still awaiting release, but we’re crossing our fingers we’ll get it sometime this year.
