Dark cult-film director, Darren Aronofsky, whose birthday is today, talks of his journey to filmmaking. To many viewers, it will be relieving to hear such a critically-acclaimed, contemporary auteur speak of his lack of direction upon entering college, and characterize himself as a “B- student.” From there he speaks of finding himself as a filmmaker, the tedious application process of early-90s film festivals, making connections at graduate school, and finally getting on set of his first feature film. He also offers advice to aspiring filmmakers, which includes the importance of expressing one’s personal interests through film, as it is probable that there are willing viewers who share these interests, “…because we’re all going through a very similar journey.” Just hope that you never have to endure a journey that resembles one of Aronofsky’s slippery-sloped addiction-nightmares.
