One of my favorite websites, Grantland, is being awesome and doing an Errol Morris week, and as such they are featuring a brand new short documentary by the prolific filmmaker each day this week titled “It’s Not Crazy, It’s Sports”. Each segment will document a different bizarre true story related to sports. The first one is subtitled “The Subterranean Stadium”, following a group of men who obsessively and almost religiously play each other in electronic football (remember those from your childhood?). Morris has a unique gift as a filmmaker to not judge his subjects, but to observe them and inquire. This is a truly strange and larger than life group of men that Morris lovingly documents the pure ecstasy and happiness that these men gain from this game, forming their own family. Energetically paced, Morris creates an intriguing look into this small underground group of men, and touches on themes about authorship, loss and obsession. Watch the video below.
