After the success of Take Shelter and last year’s breakout hit Mud, Jeff Nichols signed a deal with Warner Bros. to distribute his next several films. The first up is his original project Midnight Special. While we’ve yet to see an image from production thus far, a new synopsis is making the rounds online for Nichol’s project.
“Midnight Special is a supernatural sci-fi thriller from acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter). It stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon as Roy, a father desperate to project his uniquely gifted, eight-year-old son Alton, played by newcomer Jaeden Lieberher. Joined by Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst, this group must race to get Alton to a secret location all while being hunted by an extreme religious sect led by Sam Shepard and a government task force headed up by Adam Driver. It is a full-on chase, the outcome of which could bring about a world-changing event.”
2015 will known as the year that Batman faces off against Superman, and when the Star Wars series takes flight again, but, as a cinephile, this has my attention more than anything. Nichols has announced himself as a creative force to be reckoned with in Hollywood and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the sci-fi genre.
Midnight Special is due to hit theatres November 25th, 2015.
