In this first installment of Critic Interviews I sit down with acclaimed writer David Ehrlich.
Whether he’s opining on the latest video-gamed adapted sci-fi movie Silent Hill: Revelation or the new meditative Abbas Kiarostami film Like Someone In Love, David’s writing contains a certain vitality and dexterity found only in the most gifted of authors.
What that in mind, I was fortunate enough to chat with him on a myriad of topics ranging from the values of Twitter, Close-Up, his filmmaking aspirations, graduate school at Columbia, and why New York City is the only place to live if you love movies. Click below to listen. We hope you enjoy.
David Ehrlich is a film critic and Columbia graduate student based in New York.
You may find his work as the senior editor at Film.com, co-host of Operation Kino, founder of Criterion Corner, and on his personal Twitter account.

Where’s the RSS for this new podcast I must subscribe to??? 😛
Will definitely give this a listen soon Sam.
We’re going to make into a podcast soon enough. Thanks for the interest Andrew. Write back here and let me know what you think once you’ve listened to it.
Great interview, Sam. It’s one thing to see a critic’s writing, but to give them the audio interview treatment the same way one would give to a filmmaker is really engaging.
I recently got around to seeing Close-Up because a.) I adored Certified Copy, and b.) the internet’s constant admiration for Kiarostami, especially Ehrlich (oh, and Labuza), and it did not disappoint. It’s really phenomenal and you should definitely check it out.
I can’t say I’m the biggest expert on Ehrlich’s writing, but I always enjoy his tweets and his Criterion Corner posts, plus I have no doubt in my mind there’s not a movie that I’ve seen that he hasn’t seen, so yeah, he’s ridiculously knowledgeable. I wish him great luck in his relatively new gig at film.com. May he continue to refuse to capitalize his tweets.
P.S. LA is just as terrific a movie town as NYC or even Austin.
thanks, Christopher! if you can listen to my dumb voice prattle on and still have an interest in reading any of my stuff… you’re an idiot. but an idiot for whom i’m deeply grateful! : )
