While Inside Llewyn Davis’ due for theatrical release today (read our review of the masterpiece here), the Coen Brothers are already working on another musical-esque feature — this time, a comedy. Vulture reports that this is one of two brothers the pair are in the middle of. When asked if they would ever consider making a musical, Joel Coen called Llewyn Davis “as close to a full-blown musical as we would make … but one of the two things we’re right now, it’s not a musical per se … but it has what might be considered more traditional musical pair numbers.” During the pair’s conversation, Ethan later confirmed that “one of the two things we’re writing now” was “a musical comedy.”
Earlier this week the pair mentioned that a “sandal movie”, set in ancient Rome, was also currently in works. Whether either piece will be released soon is another matter altogether; as Joel Coen said earlier this year, at the Telluride Film Festival, some projects may find themselves shelved “for 20 years”, or may simply encounter development issues.
At Telluride too, the brothers mentioned that they were “writing something … where the main opera (was) an opera singer”, which some speculate is another taste of the aforementioned musical comedy. Is the concept musical? Does it possess comedic elements? It’s hard to tell at this stage, though with the vague premises easily linked, it’s quite possible that we’ll see the two ideas meld, if they’re not already.
