Ladies and Gentlemen grab your favorite prop, 50 Shades of Grey has arrived. The erotic novel by E.L. James had its sultry trailer unveiled this morning and was easily the talk of the town. The film starring Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and James Dornan as Christian Grey certainly looks to hit all the notes fans of the novels were looking for. Submissive woman? Check. Shirtless Man? Check. Whips, chains and bondage? Yup that’s all there too.
For those uninitiated in the story of sexual awakening, Anastasia Steele takes a job in interviewing the incredibly successful entrepreneur and billionaire, Christian Grey. Although she feels the interview went poorly, there’s a spark that ignites between them. What follows is an erotic exploration between master and slave, complete with all the kink you need.
The existence of a “trash” novel in the mainstream, has led to constant backlash and dismissal of the novel’s claim to fame. It sure isn’t the first novel to explore exciting means of copulation, but few novels have managed to make such a large impression. While the film adaptation looks to be showcasing exactly what fans of the novel want to see, just how far is a studio film going to be able to show and how much will they leave for the much more powerful use of imagination.
