Even though Marvel is still on the hunt for a director to replace Edgar Wright for the Ant-Man movie nobody wants to see anymore, they have made progress on a film that I know I want to see. Variety reported that a deal between Sinister director Scott Derrickson and Marvel was soon to be struck for him to take the helm on Doctor Strange. Derrickson then just barely confirmed via Twitter his involvement.

Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I’ve been clamoring for this movie as soon as Marvel started building their Avengers universe. His powers as the Sorcerer Supreme allow him to conjure magic to fight supernatural forces, and if you’d like a nice introduction in 90 minutes, the animated film Doctor Strange is play instantly on Netflix and is a worthy origin story. While my dream project of this film had David Cronenberg directing, I’m certainly not complaining about Derrickson. (Side-note: The other part of my dream project has Viggo Mortensen starring. Make it happen.) The man certainly knows how to create suspense, and his horror background should prove interesting when he applies it to Doctor Strange. I’m just hoping Marvel doesn’t strangle him creatively too much, because this man comes from a primarily R-rated background and I can’t see Marvel approving of some of his darker qualities. Nonetheless, this is good news and I look forward to Doctor Strange with a 2016/2017 release date likely. You can catch Derrickson’s next film Deliver Us From Evil starring Eric Bana in theaters on July 2nd.
