When we talk about the greatest American filmmakers of the past quarter century, I feel like we don’t bring up Richard Linklater in that conversation enough. The man has created some defining pieces of American life in cinema with Dazed and Confused as well as a perfect romantic trilogy with Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. With his most recent film, he looks to be leaving an undeniable stamp on our culture with Boyhood. Filmed over the course of 12 years, Linklater would reunite his cast yearly to update the story of Mason as he ages from age 6 to 18. Our Kevin Ketchum had stellar praises for the film when it screened at SXSW. I have not seen the film, but based on the early word and my overall faith in Linklater, this is something like we never seen before.
Written and Directed by Richard Linklater, Boyhood stars Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and newcomer Ellar Coltrane in the lead role. The film will be released on July 11th.
