Fresh off the Memorial Day weekend we have news about Amour director Michael Haneke’s next project. Film Comment reports that the film is titled Flashmob a is set to shoot this Summer. Set partly in the U.S., the film will follow multiple characters and Haneke says it will explore “the fragile relationship between media and reality” as these characters connect through the internet and unite at the end in a flash mob.
A lot of directors direct the hell out of their films, but Haneke directs the hell into his films. His films are some of the most emotionally draining I’ve seen, and would be unbearable to watch if not for his mastery of direction. I remember when Amour came out, me and some friends went to go see it for a “bro’s night” because that’s what cinephile losers like us do when we get together for a night out. We all walked out of that film not saying anything until one of us broke the silence minutes later with “That was fun?….I think?”.
With that said I’m already looking forward to the next “bro’s night” to see Flashmob as I will pay good money to see anything Michael Haneke does. With his grim outlook in his films, it will certainly be interesting to see what he has to say about social media and the Internet age. With a start date for this Summer, we should expect casting soon. Keep checking here as we’ll be sure to report any updates on this film.
