Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart’s last film together was the surprisingly entertaining and not at all what the ads said it would be Adventureland, where Eisenberg played that nerdy, verbose type he’s honed to a science and Stewart demonstrated that her affectlessness can be used for good. Now the pair has been signed to the film American Ultra, directed by Nima Nourizadeh (previously of Project X) and written by Max Landis (whose Chronicle was among the better recent found footage films).
The description of the film casts Eisenberg as an unmotivated stoner type living with his girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart) in a small town, which sounds like the setup for every indie movie made recently. The twist comes when Mike becomes the target of a government plot to wipe him out, which will hopefully lead to a comedic setup better than the similar in tone 30 Minutes or Less. Producer Anthony Bregman sold the film with this quote: “Simply put, American Ultra will be the most fun you can possibly have in a movie theater without the use of drugs, fireworks or canola oil.” That should be more than enough to whet the appetite for this project until it begins production in April of 2014.
