We’ve known there was going to be a followup to this year’s smash hit Godzilla, and now we have know when we’ll see it. Variety reports that Legendary and Warner Bros. have set a June 8th, 2018 release date for the sequel currently just referred to as Godzilla 2.
There’s not much known about the sequel, but at Comic Con this year director Gareth Edwards revealed that the film will feature historic Godzilla monsters Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah. Why the 4 year wait? Gareth Edwards will be directing a Star Wars spinoff film set for release sometime in 2016. After he finishes up that film he will return to helm Godzilla 2.
I’m glad that Legendary and Warner Bros. are choosing to wait for Edwards rather than just rush ahead for a quick buck, especially given the $500+ million that the film brought in. Godzilla is one of my favorite films this year, and having spent most of my childhood watching Godzilla films, Gareth Edwards did the character justice. He brought a terrific sense of spectacle, scale and gravity to the King of the Monsters. Naturally, I’m incredibly excited for Godzilla 2, and I’ll go mark off June 8th, 2018 on my calendar.
