Having already served as his avatar for the issues of cloning/genetic manipulation in Gattaca and the token authority figure in the examination of the international gun trade in Lord of War, Ethan Hawke is once again signed up to work with writer/director Andrew Niccol, playing the lead role in his latest, as-yet-untitled film about drones. Chris Pine was previously attached to star when the script was acquired by Voltage Pictures in May, but dropped out for unknown reasons.
The plot as described in the press release concerns a fighter pilot who flies drones in Afghanistan remotely from Las Vegas, then goes home to his ordinary family with their ordinary problems. He wonders if the war will ever end and if he’s not just creating more terrorists. This, of course, reads like “Hey, I’ve seen Munich and Zero Dark Thirty and any number of terrorism-related films in our wintry post-9/11 climate,” but Niccol was ahead of the curve on the issues of genetic manipulation, reality TV (The Truman Show) and manufactured movie stars (S1m0ne), so hopefully this film will be more like those and less like In Time.
The film is being produced by Voltage Pictures, also responsible for Don Jon, and will begin shooting in February.
