I’ve got good news, and I’ve got not-as-good news. The good news is that David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars has finally gotten American distribution! The not-as-good news? We won’t see it this year, as distributor Focus World will put out the film in early 2015. The plot follows the intersections between multiple people in Hollywood, including a self-help novelist (John Cusack), his daughter (Mia Wasikowska) who has recently been released from a sanitorium and an anxiety-riddled actress (Julianne Moore).
Cronenberg is a director I highly admire, as he always manages to be incredibly unsettling even at his most tame. Nobody does disturbing with the same finesse that he does. He’s brought together a nice cast for this with John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Olivia Williams, Mia Wasikowska, and Sarah Gadon – including a reunion with his excellent Cosmopolis star Robert Pattinson. It’s worth noting that Julianne Moore won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for this film, so it begs the question why Focus World doesn’t put it out in limited in December so they can qualify her for an Oscar nomination run. Regardless of all this, any sign of release for this film is better than none, so I now await “early 2015” eagerly.
