The star for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman could not be brighter. The film has been selected to open the Venice Film Festival and close the New York Film Festival, perhaps signifying a strong pedigree. Inarritu is no stranger to having his films widely acclaimed. While Biutiful, might have been a minor misstep, Babel and Amores Perros were considered gems. This new international trailer for Birdman shows not only one of the most anticipated films of the year, but perhaps one of the most intriguing as well.
Birdman follows Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) a washed-up actor whose best known role was the superhero, Birdman. Thomson is trying to prove that he’s still a capable actor and creates a broadway play for him to show his acting chops. From the trailer this is very obviously a dark comedy, mixing in the painful reality that surrounds Thomson’s attempt to reclaim glory and how his mind reflects his persona. A lot of hype is surrounding the cinematography as well. Emmanuel Lubezki (Tree of Life, Gravity) is involved and the film has been edited to seem like that it is one long shot.
Birdman will be in theaters October 17, 2014 following its premiers at Venice and NYFF.
