One of the best things about the internet is that you suddenly have a wealth of interviews and anecdotes from your favorite filmmakers is at your fingertips, and you discover beforehand unseen footage that enlightens your understanding of the filmmaker’s catalogue. Take this one for example, back in 1988 when David Cronenberg (who has Maps to the Stars coming out this week) was promoting his underrated gem Dead Ringers and stopped by what seems to be an Italian talk show with host Enrico Ghezzi (whom you never see) to discuss the film and his career up to that point. This interview is bizarre, going all over the place to the point where I can’t tell you what’s going on at any given moment, just that I’m totally engrossed by it. At some point they start talking about the intrinsic relationship between machines and humans and the link of identity between them. Some interesting points are made by Ghezzi about the constant theme of duality in Cronenberg’s films, the relationship between snuff film and perceived reality, and Cronenberg talks about the nature of influence in film by other films. It’s a crazy but totally captivating conversation. Check it out below.
