My feelings towards Johnny Depp these days is similar to the old phrase “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” He’s always been drawn to quirky characters throughout his career, but the past decade has seen him grow stale when it comes to his choice of roles. Ever since the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, he’s been coasting off the “Depp plays a whacky character!” shtick and it’s gotten well past the point of exhaustion. With that all said though, I really do like Depp. There’s no denying the guy has loads of talent and what struck me here in this trailer was that it seemed Depp was actually creating a character with Charlie Mortdecai rather than just phoning it in under a bunch of makeup and facial expressions. I don’t want to get too excited as I’ve been burned before in my faith in Depp, but for now I’m at least intrigued. Side note: This trailer also begged the question – why hasn’t Depp worked with Wes Anderson? Is this his audition video for him?
The plot revolves around renowned art-dealer Charlie Mortdecai, who gets caught up in a race to find a stolen painting that contains the code to a lost bank account full of Nazi gold.
UPDATE: The settings on the YouTube video have been switched to private for some reason, so for now just click over here to Apple to watch the trailer.
