With Liv Ullman behind the director’s chair and a cast of Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell, it was only a matter of which film festival Miss Julie would appear. When the Toronto International Film Festival revealed the first wave of films for 2014, it was announced that the film will have its World Premier in Toronto. Along with the announcement is the very first look at what we can expect from Miss Julie.
The film is actually based on a 1888 play by August Strindberg. It’s an inside look into the life of a young woman (Chastain) who is trying to except the social expectations placed upon her. She goes far outside of her class and participates in a servants party. Drawing the attention of Jean (Farrell), a valet who is wise beyond his post, they engage in a love affair that might have incredible ramifications on their status and life.
From the depictions in the trailer, Miss Julie will follow the small-scale affair of the play its based on. With only four credited parts including Samantha Morton as the maid of the household, the action seems to be incredibly tense. Exactly what will come out of Miss Julie’s love affair will be discovered when the film premiers at TIFF 14.
