In the sequel to Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall will direct himself today in Garry Marshall’s Birthday. It has an all-star cast consisting of Ashton Kutcher, Jon Bon Jovi, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ryan Seacrest, Jeff Probst, Madonna, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, inexplicably playing Marshall’s manager, and Marshall himself in the starring role. In the film, Marshall turns 79.
Marshall is perhaps best known for directing Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, leading her to a Best Actress nomination, or maybe it’s for directing Lindsay Lohan in Georgia Rule. He created the television shows Happy Days and The Odd Couple, and made Anne Hathaway a star with the Princess Diaries films.
Born in the Bronx in 1934, Marshall started out as a joke writer, writing for The Tonight Show with Jack Paar and The Dick Van Dyke Show. He then got into the business of writing for and creating TV shows – in addition to Happy Days and Odd Couple, he created Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy. He then moved into directing films, starting with 1982’s (rather awful) Young Doctors in Love but moving towards far better efforts like Pretty Woman in 1990 and the surprisingly moving Frankie and Johnny a year later.
More recently, he has turned towards star-studded affairs like the aforementioned Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve. He also memorably appeared on Louie last year in two episodes as the chief of CBS during the Late Show arc.
Anyway, it’s also Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday today (turning 58). She won an Oscar for her role in Ghost, but let’s all watch Sister Act together, instead!
