UPDATE: Another anticipated auteur delivery will be taking a bow at the 52nd New York Film Festival, according to Variety. Paul Thomas Anderson’s period detective mystery set in Southern California will premier October 4th. Vice will be the third of his works to hit NYFF; Punch-Drunk Love was featured as the centerpiece gala in 2002, and Boogie Nights closed the festival back in 1997.
Inherent Vice stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Jena Malone and Benicio Del Toro. Warner Bros. has slated the film for a Dec. 12 theatrical release in limited theatres.
David Fincher’s upcoming thriller Gone Girl has been selected to open this year’s New York Film Festival. Opening at the NYFF is quite an honor and one reserved for films kicking off an Oscar campaign. Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel is one of the more highly anticipated features of the fall. Fincher has past experience with the NYFF. He debuted The Social Network there in 2010 and the film later went on to garner a great deal of critical praise and, eventually, multiple award nominations.
NYFF has gained ground on the bigger festivals like Toronto and Telluride in recent years with their premieres of films with Oscar ramifications. Captain Phillips premiered there last year, and other contenders on the roster included the U.S. debuts of Inside Llewyn Davis and Her. Fincher’s last adaptation of a popular pulp thriller (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) didn’t make too many waves at the Academy Awards, but buzz surrounding Gone Girl has been high and this film is right in Fincher’s wheelhouse. October has been kind to the last two Best Picture winners (Argo, 12 Years A Slave), we shall see if lightning strikes three times in a row.
The 52nd New York Film Festival runs September 27th through October 13th with Gone Girl debuting at the opening night gala. For the rest of us, Gone Girl hits theatres on October 3rd.
