2013 saw a great deal of self-contained films released, including awards contenders Gravity and All Is Lost, but writer/director Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) has a nice gift waiting for audiences come April. Locke, starring Tom Hardy, centers around a man driving home in his car, but that’s not the whole story.
Yahoo spoke with the director to get his thoughts. “It’s a complex one because we don’t want to give away the reason for the journey because we want that to be a surprise,” Knight said. “We don’t want to mislead anyone to believe that it’s a crime caper or a murder mystery. It’s not.” Rather, Locke is a suspenseful thriller that ratchets up the tension with each passing second.
Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy, affecting a Richard Burton-esque voice for the film) answers a single phone call that causes a successful construction manager to unravel his entire life during his drive home. All taking place over the course of one absolutely riveting car ride, LOCKE is an exploration of how one decision can lead to the complete collapse of a life.
The film also stars Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman. Locke hits theatres April 25th.
